Sophie Devine is arguably New Zealand’s best all-rounder, retiring at the 2025 Women’s World Cup following her One Day International (ODI) match against England. Over nearly two decades, she was known for excellent batting and bowling performances, longevity, and record-setting performance.

Evolution as a Batter

Initially Devine batted further down the order – even batting at number 11 in her first ODI – but after working through 2013, she would move into a prominent top-order batter role, opening or batting generally in the top five. As an opener, she scored five centuries, which ranks second most for New Zealand, and was overall ninth in terms of number of ODI centuries with nine (six of which were overseas, once again second most for New Zealand).

Long-lasting Career and Key Milestones

Devine began her international cricket career at the age of 17, in 2006. Over her career she played in 159 ODIs, the second-most for a New Zealand player after Suzie Bates. She is one of only a handful of women internationally to score more than 4,000 runs in ODIs (4,256 runs) and take more than 100 wickets (110 wickets). She is New Zealand’s third-highest run-scorer for women in ODIs, behind Bates and Katey Martin who has 134 runs, and she is one of the few women to take over 100 wickets.

In the 2025 World Cup, despite New Zealand exiting early, she was their leading run-scorer scoring 266 runs at an average of 66.5. The highlight of her World Cup was scoring a century against Australia while chasing 327 runs, her third hundred during a World Cup and the second highest by a New Zealand woman in a World Cup event.

Conclusion

Sophie Devine’s ODI career is one of her gradual advance from a lower-order player to a world-class, all-rounder player. Her records in runs, wickets, centuries, and sixes suggest she was proficient in all areas of the game. As she retires from ODIs, her legacy as the best all-rounder in New Zealand women’s cricket, and her status as a world-class women’s cricketer, will be intact.

Mitchell Starc retires from T20 Internationals, bringing an end to his career in the shortest format as the 35 year old pacer decide to focus instead on Australia’s crowded Test schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup. His retirement come just six months before the next T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Starc debut in T20 Internationals back in 2012, and in 65 matches he collected 79 wickets which is second most for Australia in this format. His best spell came in 2022 against West Indies where he picked 4 for 20. He was a major part of the side that won the T20 World Cup in 2021 at UAE, and his last match in this format was during the 2024 edition in the Caribbean.

Mitchell Starc Retires from T20 Internationals to Focus on Tests and 2027 ODI World Cup

Explaining the call, Starc repeat that the longer formats always meant more for him. “Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority,” he said. “With India tour, the Ashes and 2027 ODI World Cup all coming up, I feel this is the way for me to stay fresh and fit and perform at best.”

Mitchell Starc Retires from T20 Internationals to Focus on Tests and 2027 ODI World Cup

Australia have a very tight run of cricket ahead. From 2026, they will host Bangladesh, then a tough away tour in South Africa, four Tests against New Zealand, and a huge trip to India early in 2027. Then come the 150th anniversary Test against England at MCG, followed by an Ashes series in England later that year. After that, the ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will happen where Australia will defend their crown.

Already with two ODI World Cups won (2015 and 2023), Starc is aiming at a rare chance to become the fourth Australian to lift three titles, joining Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Glenn McGrath.

Selectors react on Starc leaving T20Is

Chief selector George Bailey said Starc’s absence will be felt strongly. “I don’t think we will find someone else who can swing the new ball at 145 like him,” Bailey admitted. “We may not get a like-for-like replacement but guys like Nathan Ellis, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott and Xavier Bartlett are putting their hand up.”

Bailey also said he is glad Starc will continue in the other two formats. “It’s pleasing he is still focused on Tests and ODIs, where his influence and record speak loud,” he added.

What’s next for Australia in T20Is

Starc’s news was shared the same time as Australia announced their T20I squad for New Zealand tour in October. Mitchell Marsh will captain, Marcus Stoinis comes back after not playing the last few series, while Matt Short is included again after his injury. Mitchell Owen also return after concussion. Nathan Ellis will miss the series for family reasons, and Cameron Green is staying to play Sheffield Shield opener.

Australia T20I squad vs New Zealand: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.

Even though he not playing T20 Internationals anymore, Starc’s impact in the format is clear. His new ball swing and yorkers at top pace were match winning tools that gave Australia edge many times. He played an important role in shaping the team’s white-ball rise in last decade.

His retirement now make clear he wants to give everything to Tests and ODIs. With big tours and the 2027 World Cup around the corner, Starc look to keep his body ready and his game sharp for what will be a busy and challenging journey ahead.
